Fisheries department

 

Karnataka State has 320 Km long coast line along with 27000 Sq. km continental shelf area, 5.65 lakh hectares of various inland water resources and has vast scope for fisheries development. The brackish water area of 8000 hectares also provides good scope for shrimp/fish culture. There are about 9.61 lakh fishermen in the state of which 3.28 lakh fishermen in marine and 6.33 lakh fishermen are in inland who are involved in various fisheries activities. During the year 2017-18, the total inland fish production of the state is 1.88 lakh tonnes.

Functions

To plan, promote, co-ordinate, execute and monitor various developmental/ welfare programmes

    • To achieve optimum utilization of all the resources for aquaculture in inland sector and attain sustainable fish production from the marine sector
    • To improve the socio-economic status of fishers
    • To create required infrastructural facilities for harvesting, landing and marketing
    • To produce and supply quality fish seed for aquaculture
    • To provide technical assistance to farmers
    • To train fishers and staff in technology up gradation

      • Disposal of fishery rights of perennial and seasonal tanks by lease/tender- cum- auction
      • Production and supply of quality fish seed
      • License for exploitation of fishery resources in the water bodies like reservoirs, river stretches on payment of prescribed fee
      • Assistance for construction of ponds to take up fish culture in water logged areas and own land
      • Subsidy for purchase of fish seed
      • Establishment of “Aquapark” for promoting ornamental fisheries
      • Modernization of fish seed farms
      • Stocking of fish seed in Reservoirs
      • Supply of Fibre glass Coracles to fishers
      • Soil and water quality testing facility at district offices free of cost
