Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli taluk of Bangalore Rural district is spread over an area of 16 square kilometres (6.2 sq mi), located near the suburb of Devanahalli, about 35 km (22 mi) north of the city. It is owned and operated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), a public-private partnership. The airport opened in May 2008 as an alternative to the increasingly congested HAL Airport, the primary commercial airport serving the city. Named after Bangalore’s founder Kempegowda, Kempegowda International Airport is Karnataka’s first fully solar-powered airport, developed by Cleanmax Solar.
